Established in 2008 by Resolution A/63/111 of the UN General Assembly, the Day aims to raise global awareness of the benefits derived from the oceans and the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans.
This Decade will provide a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support countries’ actions to sustainably manage the Oceans and to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The WMD 2022 theme is 'New technologies for greener shipping' is the World Maritime theme for 2022, reflecting the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future, while leaving no one behind.
